Cory Hall at ease heading into last game with Oregon State interim tag

CORVALLIS - Cory Hall fell asleep around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and startled awake more than seven hours later.

The Oregon State interim coach did not get that much sleep in the previous two nights combined, a period in which his wife Sarah gave birth and he began preparation for the Civil War on Saturday against Oregon.

Within the swirl of welcoming a newborn son and diving headfirst into the state's biggest rivalry, Hall is also awaiting future developments with the ongoing search for the Beavers' permanent head coach.

"I have full faith in the administration and that's not lip service," Hall said. "I know whatever decision they make is going to be the right decision."

Hall did not answer a question about interviewing, although multiple sources confirmed he has interviewed with the school for the job.

Hall instead said he is waiting "day-by-day" as the decision-making process continues but is primarily thankful for the opportunity that came his way after former coach Gary Andersen and OSU mutually agreed to part ways on Oct. 8.

The question if Hall could be a candidate to fill the permanent role was not raised one day later at the press conference introducing the second-year cornerbacks coach as the interim hire.

But Hall quickly impressed as the Beavers showed dramatic improvement in the first two games under his watch. Players circulated an online petition supporting his hire.

OSU (1-10, 0-8 Pac-12) lost each of its next three games by 14 points or more, putting Hall at 0-5 in the role.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reported Saturday that Hall is not expected to become the head coach but could remain on staff as an assistant.

Junior outside linebacker Bright Ugwoegbu, who will graduate in spring with one year of eligibility left, said Wednesday he still hopes Hall is picked as head coach. Ugwoegbu remains undecided on his future, but said Hall staying at OSU would heavily impact his decision.

"As long as Coach Hall stays here, I believe I'll stay here," Ugwoegbu said. "I think the best thing to do for this team is to keep him here, whether it be head coach or assistant coach or corner coach - whatever it would be. But he needs to be here. (He is) a voice of leadership on this team."

Regardless of what job Hall takes after the 2017 season, Saturday will mark his final game with the uncertainty of an interim tag at OSU.

Hall has said he would consider staying at Oregon State as an assistant and added Wednesday he is "open to everything from everywhere." He also noted that after a lifetime around football, he knows that where he coaches next season is in many ways out of his control.

"It's a part of football and you never know where this journey is going to take you in life," Hall said. "You never fight it. You never contemplate it. You never argue it. You never second-guess it. You just go."
